2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid
At Northway Ford Brantford in Brant County (between Hamilton & Cambridge)
The 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid is a curious beast. It inhabits a segment defined by gas mileage, yet prefers to compete on quality and drive rather than that gas mileage. It forces buyers to look further than those MPG figures and into the vehicle itself. That's no bad thing.
The C-Max Hybrid is also available as a plug-in hybrid in the Energi. There are no standard gas-fueled versions available in North America, offering a bit of exclusivity to the vehicle. This European-inspired design is exclusive enough as it is, this just adds a little cream to that sugar.
The design of the 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid continues Ford's global platform initiative by being identical to the C-Max available in Europe right now. It's a tight design that offers substance too. The big grille is now a Ford signature, as are the angled headlights and lower facia.
The very raked windshield, sloped roof, simple profile and angled rear end all identify aerodynamics as an important aspect of getting good gas mileage but also gives us a handsome car at the end of it. It's a pleasing design that managed to add a little aero to what could have been a boxy MPV shape.
Inside, that European flavor continues. It's familiar to anyone who has driven a late model Ford, with quality materials, ergonomic design, lots of technology and solid, supportive seats. There is lots of head and legroom, great seating and an excellent view of the road whichever seat you're in.
Under the hood is a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine that produces 141 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque in its own right. Attached to that is an electric motor that's good for a further 47 hp, making a total of 188 hp. That motor is powered by an air-cooled 1.4-kWh lithium-ion pack under the floor at the back. In electric-only mode, the C-Max has a 21 mile range.
Drive is sent to the front wheels via an efficient CVT transmission, making for a very smooth drive. All this results in an estimated 42 MPG city and 37 MPG highway.
The 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid comes in two trims, SE and SEL. Standard on the SE is 17 inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, leather steering wheels, cruise control and CD audio. The SEL adds leather interior, power driver's seat, MyFord Touch, ambient interior lighting, keyless entry and ignition and parking sensors.
The 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid is a great people carrier even if you ignore the gas-saving hybrid motor. It's well put together, reliable and is as good to look at as it is to drive. If you're in the market for a people mover, you could do a lot worse that test driving one of these.
