The 2014 Ford Flex is certainly a polarizing design. Love it or hate it, it is a successful crossover that has been selling well for the past couple of years. Changes for 2014 include a tweaked V6 engine, interior improvements and a few styling upgrades.
The Flex is a solid-looking vehicle that looks like a hybrid between Range Rover and Nissan Cube. It's a boxy car that offers a futuristic appearance that no other current vehicle comes close to. It's slab fronted, flat sided, tall-roofed and flat backed and there's nothing else like it!
All that design is set off by the chrome bar in the grille and large alloy wheels. The coloured roof adds interest, while the single chrome bar at the back complements that at the front. It's an unashamedly modern design, but one that works much better than you might think.
Inside, that boxy design translates into lots of interior space. The three rows of seating all have enough head and legroom for adult passengers as well as plenty of storage. The seating is comfortable, the soft touch materials all feel quality and there is an air of quiet comfort as a passenger.
The driver's seat is adjustable, offering lots of ways to enjoy the view. The cockpit is modern with a configurable LCD instrument panel, LCD touchscreen, comfortable steering wheel and feature packed center stack.
With all seats up, there is room for 20 cu. ft. of cargo at the back. Fold the second and third rows down and that translates to 83.2 cu. ft. The second row comes either as a standard row which can be folded, or a pair of captain's chairs that cannot, bringing passenger capacity down from 7 to 6.
There are two engine options for the 2014 Ford Flex. The first is a 3.5-liter V6 that delivers 285 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. The second is a twin turbo 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost that delivers 355 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Both come with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The Flex SE offers 17 inch alloy wheels, automatic lighting, rear privacy glass, cruise control, air conditioning, power driver's seat, rear parking sensors, 4.2 inch LCD screen, Ford Sync and CD audio.
The Flex SEL adds 18 inch alloys, heated mirrors, climate control, heated front seats, satellite radio, MyFord Touch with 8 inch touchscreen and two multifunction screens for the instruments.
The Flex Limited adds 19 inch alloys, rear camera, power liftgate, remote entry and ignition, blind spot warning, cross traffic alert, leather interior, upgraded audio, xenon headlights, LED taillights, auto wipers, navigation and a 12-speaker audio system.
The 2014 Ford Flex offers a lot for the money. A lot of road presence, a lot of space, a lot of technology and a lot of power. If you're looking for a family car that delivers it all, the Flex could be it. Check it out at Northway Ford today!
