Steps to Sell Your Car in Simcoe


There could be a million reasons you want to sell your car in Simcoe and there are a lot of options as to how to do it.  We can’t tell you why you should sell it, but we can help you decide how by giving you all the steps you need to take.

Step 1:

The first step you should take is to determine how much your car is worth.  You can find out by searching online sale platforms and auctions.  Chances are other people with the same make and model car as you are selling them as well.  When you know how much other people are getting, you need to take stock of your own car and see if it measures up to what’s out there.  From there you can come up with a number you’ll (hopefully) be happy with.

Step 2:

Get yourself organized.  Have all your car’s paperwork and history ready to go so you can provide it to any inquiring minds.  Providing a clear picture of what your car is will be your best chance of selling for the right price.  For private sales in Ontario, you need to provide the buyer with a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) and a safety certificate to make it legal.  A bill of sale is also required to transfer ownership from you to the buyer.

Step 3:

Clean your car and get it ready to post your ad!  If you’re confident in your cleaning skills, you can detail and wash the car yourself.  Taking it to be professionally detailed might be a good way to go if you haven’t kept the car tidy consistently.  Providing potential buyers with a blank slate that they can picture themselves in goes a long way to getting the high offer you deserve.

Step 4:

Take your photos and write your description.  Take pictures from every angle and don’t forget the inside of the car.  People have become accustomed to shopping online and they have high expectations.  If you don’t take the time to showcase your vehicle in the best light, you’re unlikely to get many offers.  Transparency is key to selling online.  Be clear and honest in your description about any issues with the car or repairs that need to be made.  People want to know what they’re getting themselves into, and buying a car is a large purchase.  Having a detailed description can also help reduce the number of questions you receive and will leave only people truly interested in the car.

Step 5:

Sell!  After you’ve posted your ad, you’ll have to entertain potential buyers and take them on test drives.  Once you’ve made a deal with the right buyer all you have to do is exchange payment and paperwork.  It’s recommended that you make this exchange at a government office to take away any chance of you being scammed.  Cash or e-transfer are the most reliable forms of payment for you to receive.  A personal cheque or wire transfer carry a higher probability of fraud.
