Most of us have little to no sales experience so when trying to sell our used car, we may feel overwhelmed. You have seen online that used cars are selling at all-time highs and figure you can sell yours for a tidy sum.

The good news is we are going to give you some expert tips that will help make the car selling process easy to follow. While the process is easy, you will need to do the work and not skip any steps.

How quickly do you need the money?

This is not a rhetorical question, everyone wants their money right away but realistically, are you in dire need of cash, or do you want to take a “wait and see” approach.

If you are in urgent need of cash, you can either quote a very low price online (not recommended) or you can find motivated buyers (we will explain how to find them in a bit).

Determining the fair market value of your car

This step is also important because you naturally want to get the most money for your car. Some websites provide pricing information but you should take the quotes posted with a proverbial grain of salt.

Where you live has a direct impact on what you can reasonably expect to get for your used car. The prices you see on Kelly Blue Book may be for Vancouver or Toronto but if you are living in Halifax, the amount you can expect will be lower.

Try to keep your pricing somewhere in the middle of the pack, you can always negotiate with the prospective buyer.

Interacting with prospective buyers

Chances are, you will be advertising your car online so you will be communicating with prospective buyers via email and phone. When communicating with prospective buyers, insist on speaking with them on the phone especially if they are not local.

Some scammers use sophisticated emails to try and cheat you. By speaking with the buyer on the phone, you can get a feel for them and ask to either do a video call or meet in person. Any legitimate buyer who is interested will have no issues with that request.

Where things can get complicated is when a prospective buyer is not able to come up with the cash to buy the car. They may need to secure financing or be unable to pay you exactly what you want, in either case, you will spend time with prospective buyers that will not lead to a sale.
