How to Save Money on Gas in Canada: 4 Useful Tips

How to Save Money on Gas in Canada: 4 Useful Tips

With rising gas prices in Ontario and the rest of Canada, drivers are feeling the pressure. In the past, you could jump in your car and sing along to your favourite jams in your version of Carpool Karaoke, but those days appear to be a thing of the past.

If you are looking for a way to save money on gas, whether you are in Ontario or anywhere else in Canada, these suggestions from our Binbrook car loans team should help.

Buy gas when it is early in the morning and cooler

While your vehicle burns gasoline vapor, you are buying gasoline as a liquid, and cooler temperatures compress the fuel, so if you buy it when the temperature is below 15 degrees Celsius, you may be able to gain a slight advantage.

Some of the newer tanks auto correct for this temperature difference, but most do not, so this could give you an advantage.

Buy premium brand gasoline

This may sound counterintuitive, but please give us the benefit of the doubt. When you buy regular unleaded gasoline, up to 15% of that fuel is comprised of ethanol. This is an environmental requirement set out by the federal government.

You are getting less energy in your fuel, so you are forced to stop for gas more often.

With premium gasoline, you pay a few cents more per litre, but you are getting 100% gasoline without any additives that reduce the energy you buy. By spending a few more cents upfront, you are saving money over the long term.

Switch vehicles to either a hybrid or EV

One of the most effective ways you can save money on gasoline is to upgrade your vehicle to either an EV or hybrid.

With a hybrid, the total amount of gasoline you burn on a daily basis is greatly reduced. With an EV, you never have to purchase gasoline again so perhaps EV is the best way to go.

Make sure your vehicle is in great shape

If your current vehicle is not getting great mileage, even though you are using premium gasoline, it could be a maintenance-related issue.

When was the last time you changed the spark plugs or your tires? Old spark plugs and improperly inflated tires are just a couple of the reasons why a person is not able to get the best performance from their vehicle.

Compelling reasons to make the switch from gas-powered to EV ASAP

Aside from saving money on gasoline, which can be considerable. Another and equally important reason to make the switch is you may be able to secure a more competitive trade-in valuation for your existing car.

Used car prices are quite high, so if you traded in your existing vehicle, the dealership would give you top dollar, which could be applied to purchasing a new EV.

This is a win-win situation, but you will need to contact the dealership; even if your credit is lousy, the dealership will get you approved for a car loan, so what are you waiting for?
