Our 2 Minute Guide to Find a Great Deal on an Electric Car
Posted on May 27, 2022
Looking for a way to save money on gas? Why not say goodbye to gasoline altogether by switching over to a zero-emission vehicle? This article will show you how to find a great deal on an electric car.
There are many great quality all-electric vehicles hitting the market in Canada, and new ones are coming out every few months. It will take time to replace the millions of gas-powered cars on the road in Canada.
When you look at the economics of owning a zero-emission vehicle compared to what you are currently paying, you will shake your head in disbelief.
Reasons why owning an internal combustion engine vehicle just doesnāt make financial sense
Instead of talking about the benefits of owning an EV, there are many we could discuss; letās take a look at what it costs to own and operate a gas-powered car (diesel engines included).
- Gas is around $2.00 per litre and will hover around that pricing point for a while before some external factor justifies a rate increase. (When I, the writer of this, was 16 I worked as a gas jockey in New Brunswick, a litre of full-serve gas was $0.51 a litre for full-serve! Where do you get full serve these days?) There are additives being added to gasoline to make it more environmentally friendly, namely ethanol. The challenge with ethanol is that it does not contain as much energy as gasoline, so your range is reduced; you need to decide between filling up more often with regular or buying premium gas that has no ethanol; in either scenario, you are going to be paying considerably more.
- Maintenance bills for internal combustion vehicles can vary, but regardless of how reliable the vehicle is, there is a considerable amount of maintenance when compared to an EV. From oil changes and replacement of timing chains/belts to repairing a variety of components, the gas-powered car is prone to costly repairs, which increase your operating costs and reduces the reliability of the vehicle.
Key things to consider when buying an EV
While there are many benefits to owning an EV, you need to select the right one. We are not talking about a sedan or SUV, which is an important decision but the company that is manufacturing the actual EV.
It may seem exciting to buy from a brand new company like Tesla, but will they be around in 10-20 years?
Perhaps they will be around, but you canāt risk a large chunk of your hard-earned money taking that risk; there are brands like Ford, which has been around since cars were on the road, and their EVs and the company will be around for generations to come.
The most important thing you can do is go for test drives and find the vehicle that you love the most.
Donāt just try one EV; each one has its own distinct driving style, and you have to sample them all before you know which one is the right one for you.
Once you make the transition to an EV, you will wonder why you waited so long to take the plunge.
